    • 2/6/2008 - A ten-year-old motocross racer from Pennsylvania who was hurt while practicing in North Carolina has died. John Barto Junior says his son, Wyatt, died of head injuries Monday at the University of North Carolina Medical Center. Wyatt Barto was ranked 32nd in the nation in his division two years ago. He was returning to racing after a shoulder injury. His father says Wyatt was practicing in Henderson, NC when he crashed on a jump he had been completing all day.

  • A two-year medical study covering 270 patients of motocross accidents came to the following conclusion, "Although the overall mortality is low, the morbidity is high, with a large proportion of patients requiring surgery." The same study also provided the following injury statistics:
    • 52% of cases involved trauma to appendages
    • 33% of cases involved closed head trauma
    • 23% of cases involved blunt chest trauma
    • 15% of cases involved abdominal trauma
    • 14% of cases involved spinal trauma
    • 8% of cases involved pelvic trauma
    • 36% of cases required surgery
